Honey for SELHEL will be sourced from the Khawbung Honey Cluster under Khawbung RD Block, Champhai District, which has emerged as a key hub for community-based beekeeping. The cluster operates through a decentralized, household-driven production system involving SHG members and local producers, combining traditional beekeeping knowledge with improved scientific practices to enhance productivity and quality. With strong natural resource availability and growing community participation, the cluster ensures consistent supply of raw, high-quality honey while contributing significantly to rural livelihoods. The Khawbung Honey Cluster is a community-driven initiative involving approximately 250 producers, the majority of whom are part-time beekeepers supported by SHGs and local institutions. The cluster spans 25 villages, with strong participation from SHG households and traditional honey collectors. The total villages covered are 25, with an estimated total of 250 producers, and the nature of engagement is predominantly household-based, with both men and women actively involved. Beekeeping is practiced using both traditional and modern methods, with an average of 4–7 beehives per household and up to 30 for advanced producers. Honey is harvested 2–4 times annually depending on the method used, with the peak production season from October to April, especially December–January. Production is carried out year-round, with reduced output during the monsoon. The primary product is raw natural honey, which has high medicinal value and local demand.
