Handloom
The handloom products for SELHEL will be procured from the Vantawng Cluster Level Federation (CLF), Serchhip RD Block, which has established a structured and quality-assured production system through its Livelihoods Sub-Committee. The CLF sources its products from skilled artisans belonging to SHG households across 15 Village Organisations, ensuring consistency in supply, adherence to quality standards, and preservation of traditional Mizo weaving practices. Through this procurement arrangement, SELHEL will leverage the CLF’s existing production and grading mechanisms to access authentic, GI-tagged handloom products while simultaneously strengthening community-based enterprises and promoting sustainable livelihoods for local weavers. The Livelihoods Sub-Committee of Vantawng Cluster Level Federation (CLF), under Serchhip RD Block, initiated a Handloom Business in April 2024 with the objective of promoting sustainable livelihoods and empowering artisans from Self-Help Group (SHG) households across the cluster. The initiative aims to revive traditional Mizo handloom practices while ensuring income generation through structured market linkages. The cluster covers 15 Village Organizations (VOs), with 12 SHGs involved, and financial support is provided through interest-free CIF loans for loom establishment. Activities undertaken include the selection and engagement of weavers from SHG households across all VOs, provision of interest-free loans under Community Investment Fund (CIF), production of traditional Mizo handloom products (Puan varieties), quality grading of finished products by the sub-committee, marketing through exhibitions, fairs, and reseller networks, and repurposing of sub-standard products into value-added items. The primary products include Puanchei (GI-tagged), Puanchei Sendang, Chhuatphahpui, Tawlhlohpuan (GI-tagged), Puanropui, and Senior Zeh Puan. Value-added products include handbags, sling bags, purses, Ipte Chei bags, Kawrchei (traditional tops), and decorative and utility items. The CLF actively participated in various exhibitions and fairs to promote products, including the Regional SARAS Fair, SARAS Ajeevika Mela, and Handloom Exhibitions.
